Chapter 1: The art of staying young while growing old

Author: Hector Garcia and Francesc Miralles

I’ve recently shared a blog about the Prologue of ikigai…Lets talk about the Chapter 1 of the same.

Ikigai: The art of staying young while growing old!!

Our ikigai is hidden deep inside us…finding it requires patience ♡

They say having a clearly defined ikigai gives satisfaction, happiness and meaning to our life. In my opinion having a clear reason of life is very important.

People living in japan stay active even after they retire infact, many Japanese people never really retired. They keep doing what they love. They not only live long but also suffer from fewer chronic illnesses. The rate of dementia is well below the global age.

Blue zones- The geographic regions where people live longest.

The Blue zones- 1) Okinawa, Japan (2) Sardinia, Italy (3) Loma Linda, California (4) The Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica (5) Ikaria, Greece.

According to scientists who have studied the 5 blue zones they key to a long life is Diet, exercise, finding ikigai and also forming strong social ties.

They manage time well in order to reduce stress. They don’t do strenuous exercises but they do move every day. Like taking walks and working in their vegetable gardens. People living in blue zones prefer walking more than driving.

They have a 80 percent secret which is Fill your belly to 80 percent they dont eat untill they feel full…they stop eating when they feel their stomach reached 80 of their capacity. Fact that we dont know the exact 80 percent of our capacity but it just means to stop eating when you start feeling full.

As read in the book, the side dishes and snacks that we really dont need will give us pleasure for short term but not eating them will give us happiness for long term.

Moai: An informal group of people with common interests who look out for one another.

They stay connected to people for life, for many people its a part of their ikigai.

Members of moai contribute money every month. This payment allows them to participate in meetings, activities, dinners and more…The left over money is saved. If a member of moai is in financial trouble he/she can get an advance from the groups saving. This is interesting, isnt it?
